It’s «Jonny Bornstein Day» in Honduras today. Seriously, official holiday. Schools are closed. Banks are closed. People are heading to the streets to party. Ok, we were kidding about the holiday, but the surely the parties in the streets are going on now in San Pedro Sula, Tegucigalpa and everywhere else in Honduras after their country’s 1-0 victory over El Salvador coupled with the USA 2-2 tie with Costa Rica sent the Catrachos to their first FIFA World Cup in 27 years.
And they owe it all, or a big part of it, to Bornstein, whose goal with less than 30 seconds left in the fifth minute of stoppage time not only gave the USA the top spot in the Hexagonal, but also relegated the Ticos to fourth place, giving third and the automatic berth to South Africa to Honduras.
It was an amazing turn of events here in Washington, D.C. and we can’t imagine two more dramatic matches to end World Cup qualifying for the USA. But if you see any pictures on the web of Bornstein relaxing at Honduras’ finest resort, don’t be surprised. Way to go Jonny B!
